Ciao and buongiorno!
Our final European destination before heading back to Vancouver, Venice was everything you would expect it to be - lovely, picturesque, rammed with tourists ... yes, even in March.
I'll be honest with you. Straight up, the trip was basically three days of jockeying for walking space, getting lost and wishing I'd packed more sweaters.
But, cynicism aside, it was still nice and worth the visit. While Matt and I didn't exactly fall in love with the place, it is definitely very unique and unlike anywhere else we've seen.
As per usual, for the pictorial storyboard check out Matt's flickr site.
By the way, we stayed at Hotel Nazionale on the Rio Lista di Spagna in Cannaregio which, if ever you travel this way, we would definitely recommend.
Some of the trip highlights:
Out of the three guide books and two maps we had with us, taking a different one out with us each day depending on which we felt would be the most suitable (which, inevitably, we f*cked up every time) ...
Watching tourists feed, a.k.a. get mauled by, the pigeons in the Piazza San Marco, and also trying to figure out which drain Indiana Jones and Elsa crawled out of in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (nerds, I know) ...
Visiting the Jewish ghetto and not being able to restrain ourselves from singing, 'in the ghetto', Cartman-style (how preposterous) ...
Devouring penne with anchovies, olives and capers accompanied by a bottle of wine at Gino's ...
Spending a fair bit of time wandering around Castello looking for Scoula di San Giorgio degli Schiavoni, only to find it closed on the one particular day we wanted to have a peek ...
Viewing the tree planted in the garden at Peggy Guggenheim's studio, a present from Yoko Ono ...
Getting on the wrong vaporetto, panicking that it was headed out to sea, but then being able to watch a great sunset on the lagoon ...

Having a drink at Harry's Bar, the birthplace of the bellini ...
And the birds-eye view of Venice, from the plane - definitely spectacular.
So grazie, Venice. Prego. And hopefully we'll be able to see your sister cities someday.
